Nina Lorene Wallis Merket of Abilene, formerly of Colorado City, joyfully met her Lord and Savior in Heaven on Saturday, September 24, 2022. Visitation will be Friday, September 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home, 338 Locust St., Colorado City. The service celebrating her life is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 1st at First Baptist Church, 301 Chestnut St., Colorado City with interment to follow at Colorado City Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Bo.
Nina was born October 4, 1930, in Coleman, TX, to Richard and Eva Murriel Wallis. She attended schools in Brownwood and Colorado City, graduating from Brownwood High School in 1947. She began work at City National Bank in 1948. On May 2nd, 1951, she married her “love at first sight” sweetheart, Eugene Adam (Bo) Merket, immediately before he deployed to Germany. She worked at City National while he was deployed for two years, then she became a full-time mother and homemaker in 1953. Nina returned to City National Bank in the mid-70’s. She enjoyed her work there with her CNB “family” as Head Bookkeeper until her retirement in 1993.
Nina was devoted to God and her family. She and Bo were members of First Baptist Church for decades and she loved attending church there, then later watching the televised services when she was unable to attend. She loved her three “babies”- Rodney, Craig, and Lesley, and later her “grandbabies”. She set an example of faith, perseverance, and Godliness for her family, reading her well-worn Bibles cover to cover “at least ten times” in her words. She loved cooking delicious homemade meals for family gatherings and will always be remembered sitting with family around her big kitchen table, laughing at the hunting and fishing stories and antics of her boys. She was a willing chef to cook whatever wild game or fish her husband and boys brought home. When her parents’ health began to fail, she lovingly cared for them.
Nina was preceded in death by both her parents and her husband Bo after 62 years of marriage. She is survived by her three sons and their wives—Rod and Sherri of Abilene, Craig and Fela, and Les and Becky all of Colorado City; Four grandsons – Waylon, Carson, Caleb (& Carol), Connor (&Alison); Three granddaughters – Misty, Courtney (& Josh), Heather (&Paul), as well as several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Joe and Kay Wallis of Sand Springs, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Russell and Penny Merket of Lampasas, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Two special Grand-Dogs, Schatzi and Penny were frequent visitors to her at Assisted Living.
Nina’s children and grandchildren would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Pastor Jerry Shields and her First Baptist family for their devoted visits, cards, and prayers, as well as Hospice of the Big Country for their compassionate care of her. Memorials in her name may be made to either First Baptist Church, PO Box 641, Colorado City, TX 79512 or Hospice of the Big Country c/o West Texas Rehab, 4601 Hartford St, Abilene, TX 79605.
