She was born on January 24, 1949 in Colorado City at the Root Memorial Hospital to A.A. and Amelia Vargas Lujan.
Mary Helen was a good-hearted Catholic who put her faith in God and love her family with all of her heart. She enjoyed helping her church, praying the Rosary, and when unable to attend watch church on her television. Mary Helen was also a social butterfly as she loved everybody and never met a stranger. She was the perfect wife for her husband Gilbert, a great mother, and grandmother as well as a wonderful sister, her family was blessed to have her in their lives. Mary Helen never had a bad word to say about anybody as she felt each person was good in their own special way.
In her younger years Mary Helen earned a degree in cosmetology but her true passion was working with the children for Loraine ISD. Many will remember her from her many years teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten or from her trips to Abilene where she not only transported children to learn who were deaf or mute, but also learned to sign with them so that she could speak to them as well. Her charismatic spirit and love that she shared for all around her will be remembered fondly.
Mary Helen is survived by a son Miguel Gomez of Lubbock, her grandchildren Nadia, Zachary, Kristen, and Joshua, and by her great-grandson August Drew. She is also survived by her brothers Eddie Lujan of Loraine, Joey Lujan and wife Cassie of Loraine, by a sister Cecilia Lujan Munoz of Loraine, and by a sister-in-law Sandra Gomez of San Angelo, as well as by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends around her community.
