J W was born in Winnsboro Louisiana on November 7, 1946 to Louis and Cressie Martin Berry.
J W was a hard-working man who loved his Lord, loved his family, and loved to keep busy. He was known as a straight shooter, not afraid to voice his opinion or to tell you how you should be doing things if you were not doing the way that he envisioned. He enjoyed giving directions and being in control. He spent his life doing construction but did spend a short amount of time in the oilfield, and when it came right down to it he was not afraid to fire somebody who was lazy on the job. In his later years he loved to help with the great grandchildren, and to work in his garden, making sure everything was just right for his honeybees. J W was a 14 year cancer survivor and before he passed he made peace with hmself and with his Lord and Savior.
JW is survived by a daughter Robin Cooper of Colorado City, by a step-daughter Shannon Paz of Galveston and by a sister Elizabeth Parker of Winnsboro Louisiana. Also surviving are his grandchildren Ashley Wilkens of Colorado City, Alex Austin Brown of Colorado City, and Daniel Berry of Colorado City, great-grandchildren Aurora Wilkens, Nevin Wilkens, Everlei Wilkens, and Marisa Beltran all of Colorado City, as well as several other great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his best friend Spot, by a special nephew Jimmy Wiggins and wife Genita of Midland as well as by several other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dora Berry, his son JW Berry Jr, and by 9 siblings.
A Celebration of Life for J W will be held at the First Christian Church of Colorado City on Saturday August 21st at 1 pm with Bob Martin.
