Eugene Adam "Bo" Merket, beloved and respected husband, father, grandfather, and teacher, left this earth to join his Lord and Savior in heaven on January 26, 2014. The love of his life and wife of 62 years, Nina, was at his side. Bo was born March 4, 1929, in China Grove, TX to Floyd Willis Merket and Celia Mae Allen Merket. He was a lifelong resident of the China Grove and Colorado City communities. He graduated from Colorado High School in 1946 and from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene in 1950, with degrees in English and Mathematics. He served as a corporal in the US Army, from January 1951 to November 1952.
On May 2, 1951, just before deploying to Germany, Bo married Nina Lorene Wallis. After his return to Texas in 1952, they settled in the China Grove community, where he and his brother Lindy owned and operated the Merket Brothers Dairy and also farmed. In 1958, Bo was asked to teach in Colorado ISD; he taught algebra and physics for the next 32 years until his retirement in 1990. He was known for his phrases "Algebra is Beautiful" and "Sorry Chalk!" Twenty-four years after retiring, he still frequently heard from students telling him how much they learned under his tutelage.
Bo was an avid tournament fisherman and also a hunter; a member of the Colorado City Bass Club and an honorary lifetime member of the Concho Bass Club of San Angelo.
He is survived by his wife Nina as well as three sons and their families--Rodney & Sherri of Abilene, Craig & Fela of Colorado City, and Lesley & Becky of Colorado City. He has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers--Lindy & wife Jo Ann of Colorado City, and Russell & wife Penny of Lampasas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothea and Betty Lou.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 28, at First Baptist Church of Colorado City, with burial to follow at Colorado City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Caleb, Waylon, Connor, and Carson Merket and nephews Rusty Merket and Brooks Wallis.
