He was born on November 25, 1947 in San Angelo to parents Edward and Victoria Opersteny Plagens.
Earl was a pillar of his community bringing it local news and letting them know of important events around town since he bought the Colorado City Record in 1981. Before moving to Colorado City, the place he called home Earl worked for the Bryan Daily Eagle, the Terrell Tribune, the Deer Park Progress, and the Alpine Avalanche which he also owned for a while. He also owned and operated C. City Property Management where he rented out several local homes to families that he would make a strong bond with. Earl was a strong businessman and an entrepreneur at heart, he knew how to buy low, sell high, and how to haggle a deal with the best of them, as he was patient in his purchases.
Though Earl loved his community and everything he did for it his heart belonged to his family. He was an excellent husband and father, but an even better grandfather. Every year in the summer they would make their way to Ruidoso as a family for the Fourth of July and they always had some other family vacation planned in the summertime. Earl loved his family meals and when it came time to man the barbecue he was Johnny on the spot, ready to cook up anything especially his famous ribs, which he also shared with friends. In his spare time Earl loved being with his grandbabies, gardening, hunting, golfing and going for a drive, and finding a good story for the newspaper and wearing out the seats of his truck driving every square inch of Colorado City. Earl will not only be missed by his family but by a community as a whole who thank him for so many years of selfless dedication to them.
Earl is survived by his loving wife Sheila Plagens of Colorado City, his son Tyler Plagens and his wife Kathrine also of Colorado City, and by his grandchildren Rylie Belle Plagens, Austin Wayne Plagens, and Carter Layne Plagens. He is also survived by his brothers Franklin Plagens and wife Cathy of Dallas and Robert Plagens and wife Cathy of Bryan, by sister-in-laws Bernadette Plagens of Garden City, Leigh Plagens of Rockwall, Lynn Plagens of Goldthwaite, and Georgia Plagens of Midland, as well as by several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Victoria Plagens, by his brothers Milton Plagens, Edward Plagens, Norman Plagens, James Plagens, Donald Plagens, and Clarence Plagens, and by a sister Alice Lero.
