Steve Cheung was born in the city of Kaiping in Guangdong Province on January 20, 1951. His father was Cheung Yau and his mother was Chow Yuk. Steve has an older sister, Meliza Wong, a younger sister, Colleen Woo as well as two younger brothers, Keith and Dennis.
Steve’s family moved to Hong Kong when he was a toddler. On March 26, 1966, his whole family immigrated to the United States of America to live in Chinatown of San Francisco. After graduating high school, Steve joined the Navy. Steve went to City College of San Francisco after two years of military services including a tour in Vietnam.
Steve spent his entire career as a Stationary Engineer, first at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco and then at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward. After 38 years in the healthcare industry, Steve retired in 2011.
Steve was an active individual. When he was younger, he enjoyed camping, hiking, and skiing. In his later years, he continued with distance running. He was the fittest person among his peers because of his military training as well as his fondness of exercising.
Steve loves his family and always shows his kindness and willingness to help the elder relatives as well as his nieces and nephews.
Steve developed Parkinson’s disease in his early 60’s. He fought the disease valiantly with the love and support from his siblings. Steve passed away peacefully on October 25, 2022, at the age of 71.
Steve has been generous in supporting several non-profit organizations. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be given in his name to “LIFE ElderCare” of Fremont (https://lifeeldercare.org) or “Parkinson’s Foundation” (https://www.parkinson.org).
A memorial service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Colma, on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 10 a.m.
