Dr. Richard Wilson passed away peacefully September 7, 2024, at the age of 85. He is predeceased by wife JoEllen Wilson (nee Lawson), parents Harold and Beatrice Wilson as well as his adored granddaughter, Nicole Wilson. He is survived by his children Sally (Joseph) Duva, Christopher (Deirdre) Wilson, Richard (Fran Elmaleh) Wilson; loving grandchildren Adrianna, Victoria, Kelly, Blake, Luke, Riley, Brody, Tyler, Gabe; great grandchild Briar Cross Wilson; and sister Barbara Woolman Hamacher (nee Wilson). In addition to the close family, Richard also leaves behind many extended family members in Vermont and the Dakotas, and many lifelong friends in the Lehigh Valley.
Born in Woodbury, NJ, Richard attended Amherst College (’61), and Jefferson Medical College (’65), was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Cardiovascular Diseases, and practiced at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown, PA, for 30 years.
At Amherst, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and played guard and middle linebacker for the Lord Jeffs football team. He was a General Medical Officer in the First Infantry Division during the Vietnam War (’66-’68), serving at Lai Khe and Fort Bragg, and earning the Bronze Star. He immersed himself in his interests which included tennis, skiing, biking, and gardening (Richard was known to have taken out a groundhog or two that dared to venture into his tomato patch).
In his later years, his time was spent watching game shows and his grandchildren’s sporting events. He resided the last six years in Collingswood Manor to be closer to his daughter. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff there, especially the Whitman hallway for lovingly caring for Doc/Rich. While generally a quiet man of few words, he did leave his mark on everyone he met. He was beloved by his patients, nursing staff, and friends, with everyone noting how much they enjoyed talking and interacting with him. He always managed to bring a random and unexpected humor to situations with an “out of nowhere” one-liner.
Family and friends are invited to the Service on September 15th, 2024, in the chapel at Collingswood Manor. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00pm, followed by a brief prayer service. A private burial will take place at Albert Cemetery in Mountain Top, PA, at a later date.
