William “Skip” Flannery (70) of Collierville, TN passed away June 12 following a brave battle against cancer.
Born in Greenwich CT in 1953 to children of Irish immigrants Skip was inducted into the Greenwich HS Hall of Fame for his participation on the 1970 Gymnastics Team. Following his graduation in 1971 Skip obtained his bachelor’s in Mathematics (’75) and an MBA (’80) from the University of Connecticut. In his lifetime he enjoyed 12 Yankees baseball championships, 17 Huskies basketball championships, and countless Grateful Dead concerts.
Settling in Monroe Connecticut, Skip enjoyed a 16-year career in operations at United States Surgical Corporation (Tyco) before moving with his family to Collierville, TN. Skip went on to pursue an 18-year career at Wright Medical in Arlington, TN serving as an inspiration and mentor to his many friends, family, and colleagues.
Skip’s commitment to the community included coaching his son’s CYAA baseball teams, 12 years as a passionate coach of the Collierville Dragons competitive basketball teams participating in the Memphis Athletic Ministries, Memphis City, and Bartlett leagues. Following his medical device career Skip delivered Meals on Wheels and became a Memphis Grizzlies fan during his retirement.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William James and Georgeanna Flannery. He leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Pamela, son Bill (Moni), daughter Casey (Gui), sister Lynn (Joe) Fox, niece Erin Fox, nephew Colin Fox, dozens of cousins, and two Irish Setters (Murphy).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Collierville Funeral Home toward the end of June with a formal service to follow in his hometown of Greenwich CT at St Mary’s Cathedral.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
