Mary Nell Campbell Smith peacefully died surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 16, 2016. She was born in Memphis on Thanksgiving, November 24, 1927, the only child of Dr. Edward Guy and Nell Sigman Campbell. Mary Nell attended Maury and Bellevue schools before graduating from Central High School. She attended Christian College (Columbia) in Missouri before returning to Southwestern (Rhodes College) where she met the best looking man with the cutest convertible on campus. They married in June 1948. Mary Nell was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Richard Colin Smith. She is survived by their four children: Patricia Nell Kroell (Rusty) of Germantown, Richard Guy Smith (Cindy), Kathryn Campbell Ervin (Billy) and Susan Carroll Scott (Murray), all of Collierville. Mary Nell had two granddaughters: Kathryn Leigh Hays and Tiffany Page Smith. She also had three great grandchildren: Mary Grace Burns, Zachary Burns and Brooke Burns. She is also survived by her loving brother-in-law Bob Smith and his wife Mary Jean of Collierville. Mary Nell was a member of Delta Delta Delta fraternity, Duration Club, Memphis Woman's Exchange and Circle of Flowers Garden Club. She previously co-owned the Knit Shop and worked for her brother-in-law Ed Horner at All American Sporting Goods. Her Collierville bridge group continued to meet for over sixty years. They put away the cards many years ago but continued to meet just to spend time together. Mary Nell was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Collierville. She attended Thursday Morning Bible Study and Saturday evening service. Our Momma had the best attitude, never complained and had a sharp wit right to the end. We would like to express our love and thanks to her caregivers: Barbara Dean-Wold, Davita Brown, Lillie Conner and Charlotte Tate. The family requests that memorials be sent to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 626, Collierville, TN 38027 or the Church Health Center. The family will receive friends at 1 pm Thursday, July 21 in the parish hall of St. Andrews Episcopal Church with a service at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary. Burial in Memorial Park following the service.
