Delores M. Morgan, 89 years feisty, passed in the hands of family and extraordinary nurses at the Memphis Jewish Home on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. She did it her way, in charge until her final days, enjoying bowties and meatballs (without cheese) and a cup of hot tea with a little bit of milk on the side.
Of Boston to the core, moving to Memphis in the past decade, Delores cultivated lifelong and new friendships with Lorraine, Pat, Dot, Gloria, Phyllis and Roz. Delores (a.k.a. Ma, Auntie Dee Dee, Delo, Big D, Del, Scrappy D and Re Re) extended those bonds and connections to the daughters and sons of her friends, and to the friends of her ever-loving daughter Michelle and endearing son-in-law Steven and his family.
She held her nieces, nephews and godchildren in her heart and mind, often mentioning how proud she was of their accomplishments and growing families. Delores cherished her brothers Otto, Jim, Bob, Alan and sister Joan (all predeceased). Christmas and summer trips up and down I-93, to the homes of her brothers and sisters-in law Joan, Janet and Maureen and their families brought joyful memories. Delores felt as deeply for the many celebrations and open door of her Crovo, Collins, Hunter and Marino families.
Delores was a proud veteran, serving two years in the Army (WAC) in Japan. After a long career as a bookkeeper, she did not stop working and continued serving others. She volunteered with patients and families at the Huntington’s Disease Society office and summer camp, checked IDs as a poll-worker in local elections, assisted teachers at St. Catherine of Genoa elementary school (often saying she was back in the first grade) and welcomed new residents at Brookdale Dogwood Creek as an ambassador.
A private gathering of friends of Michelle and Steven will be held at Collierville Funeral Home, with a Massachusetts homecoming later this year.
If you would like to honor Delores, send a card to someone you love, volunteer your time to those in need, donate to MIFA or your local humane society, or skip a rock next time you’re by the beach.
