Anne White Manning, 79, was born on February 27, 1942 in Altoona, PA and died on Saturday, March 13, 2021. She is preceded in death by her mother, Louise Hill White, and father, William Paul White. She leaves a sister Patricia (Bob) Block, and children, Tracy (Larry) Schaffer, Jody (Chris) Clotfelter, and Matt (Laura) Manning. She also leaves five grandchildren: Parker, Ben, Addison, Cate, and William.
Anne grew up in Ebensburg and Grove City, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Grove City College in 1964. She was a high school English teacher for several years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before moving to Lansing, Michigan and Lincoln, Nebraska before finally settling in Germantown, Tennessee in 1977. While raising three small children she returned to school in the early 1980s and earned her Master’s Degree in Communication from the University of Memphis.
Anne was a Public Relations professional, who worked for years as a speech writer for Fred Smith at Federal Express. While there, she helped open up business relations and new markets in Australia, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. After retiring from FedEx, she worked in the public relations department at UT Medical Center. After leaving UT, she worked at Chico’s, purely for the social experience and fabulous discounts.
Anne was a social butterfly, and had many friend groups over the years, including the “Grove City Girls”, the “GNO’s”, her FedEx friends, the Ennead gang, and her newest friends at the Watermark Avenida. She loved traveling and going out to dinner with her boyfriend, Ron Swaffer, who was a huge support to both her and her family in her final months. Anne was passionate about many things, including travel, the beach, movies, theatre, coffee ice cream, Coke Zero, gummy bears, and matching sets of jewelry.
She was also known as “Mimi” to her five grandkids. She enjoyed taking the kids shopping, to the pool at Germantown Athletic Club, and loved to baby sit when it did not conflict with her other social engagements.
Anne was a brilliant, witty, kind, funny, bold, inspiring, highly opinionated woman who will be greatly missed.
