Michael (Mike) Roger Norris, 74, of Grapevine, Texas, passed away on Thursday, June 20th after suffering a heart attack. Mike was born on May 19th 1950 to Harold and Edith (Rork) Norris in Indianola, Iowa. Mike was the first of five children.
After Mike graduated from Indianola High School in 1968. He went on to study Mechanical Drafting at Des Moines Area Community College. After graduating, he began his 34-year career in Knoxville, Iowa as a mechanical draftsman for Continental Telephone. Mike continued his career, moving to St. Louis with Contel, and finally GTE, and Verizon in Dallas, Texas. He went on to partner with Jerry Harris starting CosTex Consulting before retiring. While working at Contel he went to night school to earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration from Lindenwood College. He later went on to earn his Master’s degree in Business Administration at Southern Illinois University.
In 1960, Mike met Deborah (Debbie) Gatrel when her family moved in next door. They attended school together, Mike worked his summers laying Sod for Debbie’s father, and eventually they began dating. Mike and Debbie were married in 1970 and went on to have two children, Dawn (Norris) Davis and Eric Norris. Mike and Debbie celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this past May.
In 2003, Mike retired and spent his time as Crew Chief for JMHD Racing, began excessively riding bicycles, improved on his golf game, cherished every moment as a grandfather, was the family mechanic, and always enjoyed renovating a house.
Mike was predeceased in death by his father, Harold, mother, Edith, and brother Jim. He is survived by his wife Debbie, brother Merrill (Marj) Norris, sisters Debbie (Royce) Prickett and Becky (Mike) Wood, daughter Dawn, son Eric, grandsons Jeffrey (Shelby) Davis, Benjamin Norris, and granddaughter Samantha (Jose) Lozano.
Services will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home & Memorial Park on July 12th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wrestling MS (https://wrestlingms.org/donate/),
an organization he helped start to support people stricken with MS
A celebration of life for Michael will be held Friday, July 12, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, TX 76034.
