She was born on October 1, 1937 in Columbia, South Carolina to Leita Smith Whetstone and Wellie Little Whetstone. Martha was raised in the small town of North and graduated from North High School in 1955 where she was a cheerleader, point guard on the basketball team, and on the yearbook staff. She also earned a bachelors of arts degree in English from Limestone College in 1959. While at Limestone she was co-editor of The Lantern, a member of Chi Delta Phi, President of Alpha Delta sorority, President of The Social Club Council, and Senior Class Marshall.
Martha taught high school English in Myrtle Beach, SC where she met Steve Cucci who was an Air Force fighter pilot stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB. They married in 1961 and moved to Texas in 1967.
While raising their family in the Dallas area, Steve and Martha had a busy and enjoyable social life. They greatly valued their many friends and would recount numerous outings and trips.
Martha stayed true to her southern roots while living in Texas and frequently traveled back to South Carolina to see family and friends. She played duplicate bridge and achieved Life Master status. She also worked as a sales rep in the Dallas Apparel Market.
Martha will be remembered and missed by her family and friends for her lively personality and sociability.
She is predeceased by her husband, her sister, Marjorie Leyseth Rinehart, and her brother, Joseph F. Whetstone. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Baginski (Steve), of Ridgewood, NJ and daughter, Gina Lacy (Jeff) of Colleyville and grandchildren, Chris Lacy, Lauren Lacy, Will Baginski, Paul Baginski, and Timothy Baginski.
The Memorial Service will be held at 12:00pm on Thursday, June 3, 2021 in the Premium Event Space at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home.
