Louis Scoma, Jr passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on May 23, 2022 at the age of 84 surrounded by his wife and four daughters. Lou was the second of 8 children born to Louis and Annie Scoma in Dallas, Texas on August 14, 1937. He was immersed in the Christian community which proved to be his lifelong support. Lou did not always follow the conventional path. He dropped out of high school at the age of 16 with a desire to be an air policeman in the United States Air Force. He joined the USAF in 1954 and attempted to leave without permission when told he would not be trained to become an air policeman but instead would be taught to work with computers. This changed the trajectory he planned for his career path. In reflecting on his life, he often quoted Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Lou served in the USAF from 1954-1958. After his time in the military, he began a career working in computer security with IBM, Montgomery Ward, Texas Instruments and NASA.
Lou began his entrepreneurial career in 1970 when he founded Data Processing Security (DPS) as a research and development firm specializing in computer security services. He successfully grew DPS as a management and consulting firm in disaster prevention for over 50 years. Lou took pride in his consulting work and had a passion for working until his final days. He relished the opportunity to assist other young individuals seeking to begin a business and spent his life with great enthusiasm working and growing businesses.
At the young age of 15, Lou met his forever Valentine, Naomi Sue Allen and love of his life, at a Valentine’s Day dinner. He and Sue courted for several years before he asked her to be his bride. Lou and Sue have been lovingly devoted to each other since they wed on August 7, 1957. Lou was often heard saying he was so fortunate and blessed to have such a beautiful wife who he loved with all his heart for 65 years.
In 2010, Sue was ready to enjoy retirement at their home in Hawaii after many hard years of work with DPS, but Lou had other plans and undertook the daunting task of owning Woodhaven Country Club in addition to his many other projects. He was a lifelong hard working business man with unending ideas and words…you would know this if you ever received emails from him!
Lou developed a non-profit organization, Kingdom Work Foundation in 2006. His vision was to build a Village of Hope in Ethiopia to provide education and health services to those in need. Unfortunately, due to issues with the government this did not come to fruition. Kingdom Work Foundation has been able to financially support multiple Christian ministries during the last 16 years.
Lou and Sue were blessed with 4 daughters that they love dearly. He was a proud father of Sharon, Sherry, Shelley and Stephanie. He often spoke of how thankful he was that all 4 daughters have remained married to the loves of their lives and he felt so blessed to share this life with a large loving family of 13 amazing grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was a proud and supportive Papaw attending band competitions, sporting events, birthday parties, and graduations. Some of his favorite memories were when all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were gathered together. Of course, these gatherings always included a large feast and he wanted to make sure there was more than enough food to feed a small village!
Lou and Sue enjoyed traveling around the world with friends and family. They treasured all the memories made together in their second home in Hawaii on the island of Oahu where they have many friends they love dearly. Although Lou wasn’t one to spend much time putting his toes in the sand, he truly enjoyed bringing family and friends to enjoy a little slice of paradise. He loved to take them on a tour around Oahu visiting their favorite beaches, watching surfers, and enjoying the delicious food and culture of the island.
During Lou and Sue’s younger years they were avid tennis players, loved bowling and playing racquetball. One of their favorite annual pastimes since they were teenagers was attending the Texas State Fair. So many wonderful memories have been made at the State Fair with family and friends as they consumed too many Fletcher’s corny dogs to count! Lou and Sue enjoyed cheering for the Texas Rangers and have been season ticket holders since the early 1970’s. They love being able to provide tickets to family and friends and have enjoyed making memories at the ballpark.
