Jan Leake was born at home on August 21, 1938, in Sharon, Louisiana, to Ted and Birdie Lee Norris. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 4th, 2021. She loved people, and she loved to serve others. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and as a loyal friend.
Jan graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1960 with a degree in elementary education. It was at Tech where she met Bruce, the love of her life, and in her words, “the most handsome man she ever knew”. They married in 1960 and moved to Texas three years later, where they raised their two children. Her faith was strong, and she and Bruce were very active in church. Jan most enjoyed teaching two-year-olds and singing in the choir, but she could be counted on to teach Vacation Bible School, to decorate for church events, and to do pretty much whatever needed to be done. Although she only taught school one year, she could be found every August covering textbooks, making bulletin boards, shelving library books, and doing whatever else she could to help the teachers in the schools where her daughter worked.
Jan loved being a mother, but she thought that being a grandmother was one of the best things that ever happened to her. One of the highlights of her life was being able to keep all four of her grandchildren when their parents were working. She treasured every moment with each one of them and excitedly attended every soccer game, dance recital, swim meet, band concert, and any other event where she could cheer them on. She was a fabulous seamstress and cook, and she was the first in line to take a meal to anyone who needed one. She made friends everywhere she went and could always be counted on for a smile and a laugh.
Jan is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Bruce Gary Leake, of Bedford, Texas; her daughter, Gerri Adcox and husband Dave of Bedford, Texas; her son, Mark Leake and wife Christi, of Azle, Texas; four grandchildren, Brian Leake and wife, Kat Humphreys, of Broomfield, Colorado; Alesha Saverine and husband, Andrew, of Aledo, Texas; Jackson Adcox, and Caleb Adcox, both of Bedford, Texas; three great-grandsons, Hudson, Lincoln, and Griffin Saverine; one brother, Bob Norris and wife Marg; four nieces, Linda Eddleman, Marcia Turner, Paige Shipman, and Jill Wilson; and many cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her niece, Laura Bailey.
The visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9th at the Bluebonnet Funeral Home in Colleyville. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10th at First Baptist Church Hurst.
Jan was a passionate supporter of children and education and gave generously of her time and money to local schools. In lieu of flowers, she would be honored if you would consider making a donation to www.6stones.org to support the work they do for children and their families.
