David Dickerson, of Hurst, Texas passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024 in Grapevine, Texas. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandpa, friend, and colleague to all who knew and loved him.
He was born on January 15, 1949 in Joplin, Missouri to Jack and Fern Dickerson, and spent his childhood in Kansas and Missouri. David graduated from Topeka High School in 1966 and attended Washburn University for a semester before serving in the US Army, where he was a Chaplain’s Assistant in Korea during the Vietnam War. David and Janice married on April 12, 1969. When David returned from his service in the Army, he finished his Bachelor’s in Business Education at Wichita State University in Kansas in 1972. David then spent fifteen years serving on church staffs in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas, where David and Janice relocated so he could pursue his first Master’s degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. David earned a Master of Arts in Religious Education in 1975 and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling in 1985.
David and Janice have lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for more than 40 years and raised their two daughters here. David had a successful career as a Christian counselor, serving as Executive Director of a center with more than 30 counselors on staff and as the President of a non-profit organization with a 5,000 square foot facility offering individualized counseling retreats. He held a State of Texas license as a Professional Counselor as well as a Marriage and Family Counselor when he passed. Additionally, he supervised dozens of interns as they earned their professional licenses over the course of his career.
David was a devoted husband and father, a doting grandfather, and loved to golf and fish. David spent his life caring for others in his career, his family, and in his local church. On April 10, 2017 David was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. David remained active in the lives of his children and grandchildren, and continued counseling, even in his last few months of life. David’s struggle with ALS was one of dignity and strength. Though his body deteriorated, his mind and spirit remained whole to the very end, and his joy never wavered.
David is survived by his wife, Janice of Hurst, Texas; Sara English and Tracy Davenport of Greenville, North Carolina; Rachel, Justin, Noah, Caden, and Hannah Smith of Colleyville, Texas; Bette Dickerson of Omaha, Nebraska; Kris and Tony Saia of Mineola, Texas; Kelley and James Robinson of Lindale, Texas, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout the United States and Canada. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Richard Dickerson.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 10:00 am at Cross Creek Church in Colleyville, Texas. The service will be streamed, and the family will be available to greet attendees before and after the service.
