Dr. Francis Terrell of Highland Village, Texas went home to the Lord on June 13, 2015 at Woodridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, Grapevine Texas. He was born on November 25, 1944 to the late Emery Terrell, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Terrell in Greensboro, Georgia. He was the second of nine children.
Francis was reared in Cincinnati, Ohio and then in Blanchester, Ohio. He finished public schooling at Blanchester High School as a star, record-setting athlete, then completed his bachelor’s degree in pre-med at Wilmington College, Ohio while working two full-time jobs of driving a taxi and as a firefighter in Wilmington. He made his way to the University of Pittsburgh where he pursued the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. After an internship at the University of Florida and Shands Hospital in Gainesville, he returned to the University of Pittsburgh for a post-doctoral position. Francis received an appointment as Assistant Professor at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1976 and then in 1980, went to the University of North Texas in Denton Texas as Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, and later earned the rank of full Professor in 1995 before his retirement in 2010.
Francis was a prolific researcher and author, skilled professor and psychologist, and caring mentor. He was a member of various psychology professional organizations, and the recipient of a number of honors and recognitions including Fellow and Fellow-Emeritus of the American Psychological Association. Francis served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an Intelligence Specialist.
Francis accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age. Married to Sandra Louise Terrell, Ph.D. from 1972 to 1998, Francis and Sandy had three children: Ivanna Samal, Amani Shama, and Elon Jahdal. In these three children, who were his pride and joy, he imparted into their lives a strong work ethic and love for each other, love of family, achievement in education, and giving back to others in service.
Francis leaves to mourn his passing his daughters, Ivanna Samal Terrell, Ph.D. of North Richland Hills, TX and Amani Terrell Milton, M.D. (Henry Milton, M.S.) of Fort Worth, TX; his son, Elon Jahdal Terrell, Ph.D. (Laura Terrell, M.S.) of Buffalo, N.Y.; grandchildren Elijah Cole Milton, Micah Helen Milton, Olivia Faith Terrell, and Camille Grace Terrell; four brothers, Emery Terrell, Jr. (Arnetha Terrell); Calvin Terrell; Greg Terrell (Ilsa Terrell), and Darryl Terrell; two sisters, Ernestine Terrell and Evelyn Mallory; and a host of many nieces, nephews, family members, colleagues, former students, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Emery Sr. and Carrie Terrell; brother Bobbie Terrell, and sister Carolyn Terrell.
