She began life in Many, Louisiana on September 15, 1929, the third of four children born to Daniel Ray and Estelle Cutright Lites.
She progressed through rural schools in Louisiana and Arkansas, graduating from Many High School. Her education continued at Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. DeLois graduated from T.C.U. with a B.A. in Speech and Drama in 1953 and a M.A. in Communication in 1973. She also obtained a Certification in Library Science from Texas Women's University and, as a lover of the Spanish language, spent the summer of 1984 studying in Barcelona, Spain, teaching Spanish until her retirement.
For 28 years she shared her knowledge as a teacher, first in Fort Worth ISD, but the majority of her career was spent in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD where she touched the lives of thousands of students and co-workers. In addition, there were part-time teaching assignments at Tarrant County College and T.C.U. She received Teacher of the Year award at Trinity High, was named Regional Speech Teacher of the Year and was honored to have three yearbooks dedicated to her, one each at Central Junior High, Bedford Junior High and Trinity High.
An accomplished actress, DeLois appeared in productions at Scott Theater in Fort Worth, Artisan Theater in Hurst and Onstage in Bedford, where she won an ONY award for her performance in "Over the River and Through the Woods."
She became a member of Hurst Christian Church in 1957, serving in various capacities, from Kool-Aid maker and cookie dispenser to choir member to visiting elder to elder emeritus. Highly organized and efficient, she also belonged to Eastern Star, the Bookmark Club of Hurst, Retired School Employees, the Qing Club of T.C.U. (50 year alums), Oak Crest Woman's Club and served 13 years on the Library Board in Bedford, Texas.
And yet, she still found time to visit 20 countries (several more than once) and much of the United States. Her delights included singing, gardening, reading, sewing and spending time with her children, grandchildren, daughters-in-law and extended family .
Delois Lites married Austin Newton Yeats, Jr. in 1953 and their union produced two sons, Jeffrey Kyle Yeats of Bedford and Christopher Paul Yeats, of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Both survive her, as do her six grandchildren. She loved deeply, was loved widely and will be sorely missed by all her friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, located at 5725 Colleyville Blvd. (Highway 26) in Colleyville, Texas 76034.
