Virginia Lee Campbell Miller, 87, went to be with her Lord Monday morning January 30, 2012 at her home in College Station. Her faith and trust in God sustained her through her life as well as her battle with cancer.
Virginia was born December 20, 1924 in McLennan County, Texas. She was raised near Axtell, Texas and later Bellmead, Texas where she graduated from La Vega High School. She then attended the University of Texas by going to school one year and then working a year for expenses. She also attended Baylor University and graduated with a B.A. in Education from the University of Hawaii years later while raising three children.
Virginia married John H. Miller while he was a student at Texas A&M University on 31 August 1947. They had been fellow classmates in the first grade at Axtell, but had little contact until after John returned from WWII; then began dating. John accepted a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps and Virginia accompanied her husband on many changes of duty during the next 37 years, raising a family and making a cheerful home. These stops included many stations across the country as well as Hawaii and Okinawa. She also was alone in managing the family and finances when John was deployed for extended periods.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was proud of her extended family to include a great-granddaughter born this past April. Virginia was a devoted Christian, always active in her church, and participating in various Bible studies. She was also involved with the Officers Wives Club, Christian Women’s Club, and several Bridge Groups.
She is preceded in death by her mother Eva Mae Campbell Latimer, her father William Goebel Campbell, and a sister Gloria Norman.
She is survived by her husband Lt. Gen. John H. Miller, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) of College Station; son Dr. Danny Miller and his wife Kayle of Houston; son John H. Miller, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Bryan; and daughter Melissa Merritt and her husband Dennis of College Station. She also leaves eight grandchildren Patrick Miller and wife Katie of Baltimore, MD.; Kristen Miller of College Station; Jenna Dee Detro and husband Grant of Houston; Abianne Miller of Washington, D.C.; Gracilynn Miller of Houston; James Merritt, U.S.A.F. in Tucson, AZ; Sarah Merritt of College Station; and John D. Merritt of New Jersey. Also her great-granddaughter Annakate Detro of Houston.
The family will receive visitors from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday February 2, 2012 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Funeral Services will be at 11 A.M. Friday February 3 at Grace Bible Church, 700 Anderson St, College Station, Texas. Burial will follow in the Aggie Field of Honor at Memorial Cemetery of College Station. The family would like to express special thanks to the Medical personnel that cared for Virginia at Scott and White, and St. Joseph Regional Health Center and Cancer Center. Also, a special thank you to our devoted care giver, Marie Trujillo.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Grace Bible Church, Still Creek Ranch, or Compassionate Care Hospice.
