Lorene Ticknor was born on Wednesday, January 11th, 1950, in Mesquite, Texas, to Ruby Lucille and J.D. Ticknor. Lorene was the fourth of their six children, with three brothers and twin sisters. She grew up in the Cypress area of Houston, where J.D. worked as a dairy farmer. She attended Cy-Fair High School and married Ronnie Smith in February 1966. They moved first to North Zulch, Texas, and then to Bryan, Texas. They had a daughter, Pamela Dawn 1967; a son, Clinton Shawn 1969; a daughter, Angela Evon 1970; and a daughter, Jacquelyn Kay 1979. They divorced in 1981.
Lorene, or “Rene” as close family and friends called her, attended Charles & Sue’s School of Hair Design and became a licensed cosmetologist in 1970. She worked in various Salons in the Bryan College Station area. With her love of young children, she was a loving mother. She took great joy in participating fully in raising her children and eight grandchildren, Ryan, Jacob, Tyler, Emma, Dylan, Braden, Maddie and Ellie. When her physical health caused her to retire in July 2007, she continued to work full-time caring for the children of teachers at Forest Ridge Elementary. She was an excellent caregiver, loving each child and teaching them daily. She seemed to love every minute of it. Sam, Stella, and Lane Aguirre were incredibly close to her heart.
Starting as a young girl, Lorene was always in the kitchen. She learned to be an excellent cook, becoming well-known for her chocolate meringue pies and delicious pinto beans. Bar-B-que became another passion as she participated in and won many local cook-offs and contests. She relished in family get-togethers centered around food, where she made everyone’s favorite dishes, and the table was always overflowing.
In the last few years, as her body gave way, she struggled with osteoarthritis and Kidney disease. She passed away after an extended hospital stay on January 27, 2024.
She is survived by her twin sisters Linda Hibbs and Carolyn Cavaness, her husband Pierre, her brother Rex Ticknor, and his wife Vickie, sister-in-law Linda Ticknor.. Three daughters and their families, Jacquelyn Kay and her husband, Bradley McPherson, along with their children Tyler, Braden, and Maddie; Angela Evon and her husband, Donald Tussey and their children Dylan and Ellie; Pamela Dawn and her husband, Brad Beard and their children Ryan, Jacob, and Emma. Stepchildren Billie Tussey, his wife Megan, Donald Tussey III, his daughter McKinzie, her husband David, and their children Elaina, Eric, Matthew, Logan, Hayden, Paisley, and River.
