Martha Jane Custer, 82, of College Station, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023, under the care of Traditions Hospice. Jane, passed away peacefully at home with her beloved husband, Charles, holding her hand and surrounded by her children.
Jane Custer was born to George and Minnie Laster, the third of five daughters. Her parents were sharecroppers in Randolph County, Alabama and Jane was literally born in a cotton field on December 21, 1940. Jane was about 6 years old before the family moved into a house with plumbing and electricity. She graduated from Troup County High School in 1958 in LaGrange, Georgia. The early 1960’s found Jane in Texas, where she moved around quite a bit – Seguin, San Antonio, and Pasadena – before settling in Wichita Falls to raise her family. After the devastation of the April 10, 1979 Tornado, Jane found her calling and began a study in nursing at Vernon College, Vernon, Texas. She graduated as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and continued to work as a LVN for 23 years in Wichita Falls before retiring in 2005.
Jane and all 3 of her children were saved and baptized at Bible Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. Jane remained a constant Christian who served as the Family Biblical Leader, who always answered the calls and needs of her family and friends.
Jane met Charles Glen Custer in 1992. They were married in April of 1993 in Wichita Falls, Texas. In December 2012 Charles and Jane moved to Bryan and College Station area to be near family.
Jane had many hobbies and roles - Bible Study, Sunday School Teacher, Nursing, Church Choir, Hunting, Gardening, Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys fan, Texas A&M Aggies, Family, Friends - but being Granny Jane/GiGi was her passion in life.
Jane is survived by: Charles Custer of College Station, husband of 30 years; her three children - Carl and Jeanette Kirby of Houston, Greg and Theresa Kirby Bramson of College Station, and Patrick and Judy Kirby of Waco; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and Jane’s four sisters, Reba and Raymond Smith, Alvous and Bobby Lassetter, Linda and Coleman Cody and Elaine McCook all of Georgia and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Jane was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Dr. Frank McCook and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and her parents, George and Minnie Laster, who remained in LaGrange, Georgia for the remainder of their lives.
The family has entrusted Memorial Funeral Chapel with the arrangements. The Celebration of Jane is scheduled for September 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM, 2901 Texas Ave South, College Station, Texas 77845. Mike Williams, Pastor will officiate the Celebration of Jane, followed by a reception at 2901 Texas Ave South, College Station, Texas 77845.
