He was born to the late James and Eva Thompson on June 22, 1925 in Minden, LA. Jim graduate from Minden High School and received a degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University. He served his country bravely as a Marine in WWII, seeing action at the Battle of Okinawa. He married the love of his life Wilma Louise Thompson in 1949, and they lived together in Shreveport and Houston before relocating to College Station, TX. Although he lived in Aggieland for many years and had three grandchildren attend Texas A&M University and one attend Sam Houston State University, he would only root for his Tigers.
Jim was a corporate accountant for United Gas in Shreveport and Pennzoil in Houston until his retirement. Jim was an active member of his church, First United Methodist of Bryan, and formed deep friendships with the devoted members of the Upper Room Sunday School class. He volunteered through his church and at the Brazos Church Food Pantry.
Jim was a faithful and godly man and devoted husband of 57 years, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eva “Pat” Thompson and his wife, Wilma Thompson.
He is survived by daughter Patricia Neely and her children, daughter Sarah Neely of Austin, daughter Jessica Newcomb and husband Ross of College Station, and son Christopher Neely and wife Noel of College Station; daughter Betty Hitzeman and husband John of Conroe, TX and their son John Hitzeman, Jr. and wife Lauren of New Haven, CT; and one brother, Bobby Thompson and wife Martha of Minden, LA and their son John Robert Thompson and wife Maranda of Minden, LA. Jim has four great grandchildren, Jackson Newcomb, Delaney Newcomb, Avery Newcomb, and Landon Neely. One of his grandchildren and two of his great- grandchildren were given James as their middle name, and he has a wonderful legacy in these great-grandchildren and those to come. He has numerous nieces and nephews who he loved very much.
Jim is sadly missed and lovingly remembered. His family knows that he took Jesus’s hand and is now with Him in heaven. We think of what the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:6-8– “So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”
Visitation will be held beginning at 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 13, 2015 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home beginning at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Rick Sitton officiating. The family will hold a private graveside service later in the day at College Station Cemetery.
Pallbearers are John Hitzeman, John Hitzeman Jr., Chris Neely, Ross Newcomb, Charles Gray, and Mike McMichael. Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Thompson, Louis Hudson, Henry Moore, and the members of the Upper Room Sunday School Class.
