Merritt Island

Richard Lee Day, Jr., passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 at the age of 82, leaving his wife of 64 years, Faye and their children, Linda Day of Jacksonville, FL, Danny Day and wife Jackie of Merritt Island, FL and four grandchildren.

Richard, or Dick as he was also known, moved his family to the Space Coast in 1960 for active duty with the U.S. Navy. After brief tours overseas and on the West Coast he retired from the Navy with 20 years of service.

The family returned to Merritt Island in 1967 and he went on to employ with support services at Kennedy Space Center before retiring permanently.

Dick was one of the pioneers who helped form Merritt Island Little League and Jim Hensley Field.

For the past 12 years, Dick has played an active role in the local chapter of Mended Hearts outreach for the American Heart Association and several retired military organizations.

The family requests that donations be made to the organizations most important to him in lieu of flowers.

Calling hours will be Friday, July 29, 2011 from 12 to 1 pm followed by a funeral service at 1 pm at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home. A private burial will take place at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
