He was 95 years old. He was born in Centerville, Ohio but grew up in Newark, Ohio and attended Newark High School. He attended Ohio State University before entering and graduating from the US Naval Academy, class of 1944, with a Bachelor of Science.
Nicholas served aboard the USS Idaho during WWII. He organized and administered a heavy attack jet squadron from commissioning to completion of operation aboard the carrier USS Midway. On his tour of duty in Honolulu, Hawaii, he organized and directed a command specialized in conducting unique missile reentry studies. This study contributed significantly to the missile defense program. He received the Navy Commendation Medal for outstanding performance of duty. Nicholas loved to invent things. He had two large expandable file folders full of his ideas and holds patents for Aircraft Landing Aid and a Duration of Flight Indicator.
Upon retiring, he moved to Brevard County because of his love for fishing and golf. He was an avid bass fisherman and bridge player. He received a masters of Science from Florida Institute of Technology. He also worked as a Florida Area Field manager for Gould, Incorporated. Nicholas was active in his community at IRCC where he would stock the water hazards with native fish.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Eileen Curts Evans in April 2003 and great-grandson, Austin Roy Webb.
Nicholas is survived by three children: Ember Elizabeth Evans, Nicholas Andrew Evans, Jr., and Mary Michelle Bubb (Timothy M.); four grandchildren: Elizabeth Diane Rushton, Matthew Andrew Sandberg, William Daniel Sansom, and Jennifer Joy Webb; and great-grandchildren: Kobey Dean Rushton, Ashlynn Ember Rushton, Matthew Andrew Sandberg, Jr., Brody Scott Sandberg, Justin Ty Taylor, and Caden Alan Webb.
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, followed by military honors graveside at Brevard Memorial Park, in Cocoa, Florida.
