John T. Vandergrift “Big John”, “JT”, “Heavy”, of Cocoa, FL , passed away at home peacefully, Feb. 3, 2012. A U.S. Navy WWII veteran, John served aboard the USS Ticonderoga-CV14. John was born in Tampa, FL, Feb. 8, 1925. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife of 59 years, Mary Lee “Mimi”. John retired, after 37 ½ years from BellSouth. He was a lifetime member of the Cocoa Elks and Telephone Pioneers. John is survived by his daughter, Kate Sonsini-Adams (Joe) Merritt Island, son, Tom Vandergrift (Donna), Jacksonville, FL, grandchildren, Tony Sonsini, (Krista), Cocoa Beach, Nannette Long (Don), Eric Buckley (Angie), Derek Buckley, Julie Buckley, greatgrandchildren, Brandon & Melissa Long, Nikky, Icess, Tomi Buckley, Harrison, Brooke, William Buckley.
John’s memory is a special gift that will live on with all of us and those who had the good fortune to know him. We are thankful for the time we had together and will miss him greatly. “Bye now”.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 5 PM at Brevard Memorial Funeral Chapel 5475 N. US 1, Cocoa, FL. Visitation following the service.
