Susan Ellen Nabors Warren was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 7, 1949, and moved to the Brazosport area in 1955 at the time her father became publisher of the local newspaper, The Freeport Facts, now The Facts.
Following her graduation from the University of Texas with a degree in Education, Susan married Michael Warren and together raised their son, Lee, in Lake Jackson. Susan was an active member in the Junior Service League, the PTA and is a lifetime member in PEO. The family moved from the area in 1986, spending time in the Philadelphia area and in Lafayette and Walnut Creek, California. They returned to their home state of Texas and have lived in Kingwood, Texas since 1995.
Susan began her career in education teaching Special Ed Reading at O.A. Fleming Elementary in Freeport, Texas. After moving to California, Susan planned and implemented a program focused on teaching students living in homeless shelters and provided basic instruction to male and female adult inmates in the Contra Costa Jail system.
She continued her work in the Texas prison system teaching GED equivalency at the Hightower Unit in Dayton, Texas. Susan had a very high success rate of graduation for the 18 years she taught there.
Susan was the ultimate Nana for her grandsons, literally crossing continents several times to visit her first grandson, James, in France. She was a constant playmate, cookie master and sideline queen at James’ and Will’s assorted sports contests. The grandsons were the center of her universe and they adored their Nana in response to her love for them.
Susan leaves behind many people who will miss her kind, gentle personality and warm smile. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend to all who knew her. She is to be buried in Restwood Cemetery where she will join her parents. A private family celebration of her life is pending
