Dr. George Roberts Jr., a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully at his home on September 17, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on November 9, 1930, in Timpson, Texas, Dr. Roberts was a man of exceptional character and unwavering dedication.
Dr. Roberts' academic journey began at a young age. He graduated from Timpson Colored School at the tender age of 14. Following graduation, he worked alongside his brother, Emmitt, hauling wood until he was old enough to pursue higher education. He attended Hutson Tillotson University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. His commitment to learning led him to further his education with a Master's Degree in Education from Texas Southern University and a Doctor of Education from the University of Houston. His academic pursuits also took him to Portland, Oregon, and Saltillo, Mexico.
In 1959, Dr. Roberts met and married the love of his life, Mary E. Roberts, also known as Sugar. Their love story, beginning on Valentine's Day, was a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment.
Dr. Roberts' career in education was marked by his passion for teaching and mentoring. He began his teaching career at Lanier High School, where he was eventually promoted to principal. After the closure of Lanier High School, he served as a counselor at Freeport Intermediate and later became head counselor at Brazosport High School. He concluded his career as principal of Lighthouse Alternative School in 2001.
Dr. Roberts was deeply loved and respected by many. He was a bible scholar and a pillar of the First United Missionary Baptist Church community. He loved the word of God and served the people of God faithfully. Dr. Roberts also bravely served his country in the US Army.
Preceded in death by his parents, George Roberts Sr. and C.D. Roberts, and siblings Lena Mae Williams, Sal Mae Thompson, Corine Hooper, Emmitt Roberts, Glen Roberts, G.R. Roberts, and Elmer Ray Roberts, Dr. Roberts leaves behind a legacy of love and service. He is survived by Mary, his devoted and loving wife of 65 years, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Dr. Roberts was known for his nurturing nature, kindness, and loving spirit. He was a beloved "Papa" and "Gramps" to countless individuals. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held Thursday, September 26th, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church (1615 Skinner St, Freeport, TX) with funeral services following at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Park (1038 W. Plantation Dr. Clute, TX)
