Known for his many musical talents, Wilbur was one of the most sought after Southern Gospel music vocalists in the Western United States. His natural singing talent brought him attention from fans for whom he performed at hundreds of churches for over 75 years, always singing with a joyous heart while connecting to those who needed spiritual uplifting.
Wilbur was the youngest of seven children born to Mathew and Mittie Daniels on March 7th, 1935. Raised in Caruthers, CA, he began singing with his family at a very young age traveling with The Daniels Family gospel singers to area churches in the Central Valley. At 12 years old, his talents were discovered by Don Smith where he then began singing with The Gospelaires. Along with siblings J.C., Raymond and Wilma, the group traveled the country throughout the 1950’s, Wilbur just a teenager. He regaled thousands of people with gospel classics so popular after World War II, singing lead and playing the mandolin.
In 1960, Wilbur took up the profession of piano tuning and repair where he began a 60-year career bringing his clientele’s beautiful pianos into proper harmony. He was an expert technician knowledgeable in complete piano rebuilding and repair, from the smallest of spinets to the largest concert grands, always relishing that people could then enjoy perfect tonal music the way he did.
Wilbur continued to bring his vocal talents to the stage where for the last 25 years, he led the popular Chordsmen Quartet in Fresno. Together with his wife Dena, they built a dedicated following of fans attending concerts each month where they could enjoy their gospel music favorites. Wilbur was always the happiest of hosts, quick with wit and always gracious, remembered most for singing his signature song, ‘The Lighthouse’.
His numerous recognitions include special commendations from the U.S. Congress and City of Fresno as well as awards from the Southern Gospel Music Great Western Fan Festival and Christian Business Men’s Connection.
Loved by so many, Wilbur cherished his time spent with family and loved ones. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dena (née Vick), son Jody Daniels (Anita), son John Barritt (Christine), daughters Jackie Hagberg (Skip) and Patty Barritt Groppetti, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of a Life Well Lived for Wilbur will be held Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Peoples Church, 7172 North Cedar Avenue, Fresno, California 93720.
