Mary “Tess” Moffit passed away peacefully on March 29, 2021 at the age of 96-years-old. She was born on June 11, 1924 to Henry and Theresa Skarbek in Newark, New Jersey and spent her childhood in the Newark area. Mary was the oldest of seven children and was also a twin (Sophie). She married Thomas Lawrence Moffit on October 18, 1947 and they were together for 53 years before his passing in 2004. They raised their family while living in New York, Pennsylvania and then Michigan. Mary had many talents including playing the piano since the age of eight, gardening (she could salvage almost any plant) and a passion for jig saw puzzles. She was trained in classical music and loved listening to live concerts, especially the DSO. Mary loved talking and sharing stories over a good meal at many local restaurants with her family. Mary always said “eat your dessert first!” She was an avid sports fan, always cheering on the Red Wings and the Tigers. She attended her first Tiger game on her 90th birthday.
Mary was the devoted wife of (the late) Thomas Lawrence Moffit and the proud mother of Thomas Henry Moffit, (the late) James Patrick Moffit, Mary Anne (James) Lee, Timothy Lawrence (Susan) Moffit, Susanna (the late Kenneth) Daubenspeck and (the late) Michael Lawrence Moffit. She was the adored grandmother of ten grandchildren, also a great grandmother of ten. She is survived by her dear brother, Walter Skarbek of New Jersey.
Mary developed many strong friendships while living at Pine Ridge of Plumbrook Senior Community for the past 16 years. Her family would like to extend a gracious “thank you” to their staff and to the Right at Home staff that took such wonderful care of their mother.
A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the family is having a private funeral mass.
In Lieu of flowers, Mary did request that memorial donations be mailed to The Salvation Army – 16130 Northland Dr. Southfield, MI 48075 or St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities – 2800 W. Willow St. Lansing, MI 48917.
