It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph Valvano, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend on November 14, 2024 with his wife and daughter by his side. Joseph lived life with a passion for adventure, family, and the simple joys that made him who he was.
Joe was born in Detroit, Michigan to Santo and Josephine Valvano in February of 1945, one of 5 sons. In the early years of his life, Joe served in the US Army, and worked for several years as a mechanic with Champion Spark Plug.
He enjoyed trips to the casino and Las Vegas, where he could often be found at the slots or enjoying the thrill of a card game at the poker tables. He also had a lifelong love for cars; he enjoyed tinkering, fixing them up, and selling them, always finding joy in the work of his hands and the satisfaction of a job well done. A proud and steadfast Detroit Lions fan, Joe was always hopeful for the team’s success, supporting them through every season with unwavering dedication. But more than anything, Joe lived for his granddaughters, who were the light of his life. He was a devoted and loving Papa who took pride in every milestone and moment he shared with them.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Ruth Valvano; his daughter Shannon Wilson and her husband Doug; and his granddaughters, Georgia and Emma Wilson; and his brother John Valvano and his wife Joanne.
Joseph will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. His legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial visitation for Joe will be held Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 4-8 PM, with a memorial and memory sharing service at 7 PM at Resurrection Funeral Home, 40800 Hayes Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038.
