I went to EMU with Joe. I was one of his 4 suite mates during freshman and sophomore years. He was a heckuva guy, funny, smart and always with a confidence that belied his years. I came across his obit and was very sorry to hear of his passing. I had not kept in touch with Joe for all those years after our Sophomore year, but I remember him like yesterday. Not surprised he was so successful and had a great family. That was Joe, even as a sophomore in college you could see his greatness. RIP Joey.

Joe was the guy in the room who everyone liked and trusted.  He was quiet but open, kind yet firm, smart, strong, committed, humble and supportive.  I always felt like I was talking to a real human being, not a corporation.  We went through some bumpy business times together and he made them feel more fun.  But most of all he was a devoted family man and loyal friend to those lucky few. His whole being lit up and became openly effervescent when talking about his kids, wife and family. Our friendship started with a bit of guidance from Joe .Hey kid, I don't know where you are from but nice Bermuda shorts, and by the way we aren't wearing pads yet so hold off on the hitting. And a week or so after his guidance continued when I appeared confused the first day of school looking to pickup books and supplies, when he reached out and saidHey, get in line here with me as you look lost, this is where you need to be.  That was in the summer before starting High School as a Freshman and attending my first football practice and my first day of school. It has been 43 years of friendship, with some guidance along the way and optimistic support of the future. A lot of good memories and stories that can be told...(well maybe not all), but it was that early guidance and kindness my first year of High School when I knew no one, wasn't from the area and took a couple city buses to get to school, and was attending a catholic high school and I wasn't even catholic, that I made a friend who must have saw that I needed one. Thus began my timeline of friendship with an exceptional person. You sometimes wonder where the time went, visualizing some events along life's friendship path, and you feel good and you feel sad, but what stands out is pride. Proud knowing 43 years ago was a time where change and friendships began to help shape my life for the better. Joe was my catalyst to a group of lasting friendships, but more importantly he saw something and offered his friendship to me and upheld it for all these years. Joe is my friend, I am very proud of that; I know I am going to miss him. Joe you will always be in my heart and memories.
