Jerry moved to Detroit, MI with his family as a young child. It is here that he met the love of his life, Sharon. They were high school sweethearts and were married on Feb 8, 1958.
As a young man, Jerry was gifted in music, art and all sports, but baseball was his passion. He was a talented "southpaw" pitcher, who signed with The Detroit Tigers Organization upon graduating from high school.
After his baseball career, Jerry applied and was appointed to The Detroit Police Department on January 1, 1961. Jerry attended U of D Mercy where he studied criminal justice. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1982. He received numerous commendations over the course of his career. He retired from the department after 26 years of service in 1987. During his police career he also had the honor of being called back by The Detroit Tigers Organization to pitch batting practice in 1968 and was thrilled when they won the '68 World Series.
Jerry had integrity. At times he was a "comedian", a "poet" and a "singer". He was a friend to all. He was "Sunny-Plackie Papa", he was "Purple Papa", he was "dad" and he was "beloved". Jerry was many things to many people, but MOST OF ALL, Jerry was a family man. His family was his world, his pride and his joy, and he was theirs.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Sallie Fields and his brother Billy. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sharon; his children, Cindy (Brad), Debbie (Eddie), Kim (Keith); and his adored grandchildren, Cindy (Dan), Melissa (Shaun) and Tyrell. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Emma, Emery and Maisyn, whom he loved dearly. He was looking forward to the arrival of his fourth great-grandchild this October. In addition, Jerry is survived by numerous cousins.
While Jerry is no longer physically with us, his legacy lives on through his family and fond memories of lives shared. Jerry will continue to protect us, from Heaven above, in the loving arms of Our Lord.
