Ben was born in Holland, Michigan on February 27, 1934. He is survived by his wife, Christine, his son, Brian Bouwman, his daughter, Andrea Bouwman, his sister-in-law, Della Bouwman and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Elizabeth Bouwman, Jr. and his brother, Ralph Bouwman III.
A graduate of Calvin College (Bachelor of Arts, 1955) and Wayne State University (Master of Science, 1963) and having served in the United States Army, Ben was a Professor of Biology and an original faculty member at Macomb Community College for 31 years until his retirement in 1996. An avid lover of “all things sports,” Ben enjoyed attending, watching, and analyzing countless baseball, football and basketball games and was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Detroit Pistons and the University of Michigan Wolverines. He also was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Clemens, serving as both a deacon and elder and volunteering his time to support numerous philanthropic and community programs.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Clemens, 168 Cass Avenue in Mt. Clemens with Pastor Kathy Nealand officiating. At his request, cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. one hour prior to the church service on February 27, 2023. A memorial luncheon at the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Clemens in Ben’s honor will follow the church service.
