Peter E. Snyder

Peter E. Snyder of Clinton, widower of Joyce Shaw Snyder, passed away on December 22, 2022 at age 81. Peter was born September 1, 1941, in New Haven to the late Peter Snyder and Jane Monahan Snyder. He grew up in Hamden before moving to New Haven where he met his wife. Peter and Joyce settled in Clinton and were married for 44 years.

Peter is survived by his daughter Prof. Lori A. Snyder and her husband Alex Stringer of Shepperton, UK, grandchildren Amber Elise Snyder and Wil Snyder Stringer, brother Paul A. Snyder of Clinton, sister-in-law Cynthia Brock and her husband Michael Brock of North Carolina, sister-in-law Mary Jo Shaw of Indiana, a number of cousins, and many, many friends.

He graduated from Hamden High School, Yale New Haven Hospital School of Respiratory Therapy, and Municipal Police Training Academy.

A retired Respiratory Care Practitioner, Peter was employed for 44 years at Yale New Haven Hospital where he worked in clinical medicine and research. He was a Registered Respiratory Therapist and a Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist. Peter also retired after serving 22 years as a part-time police officer for the town of Old Lyme.

Peter was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clinton, American Association of Respiratory Care, Connecticut Society for Respiratory Care, New Haven Police Emerald Society, New Haven Sportsman’s Club, Irish American Club East Haven, Newport Preservation Society, and Mystic Seaport.

He enjoyed travel including RV camping, attending respiratory therapy conferences, and going on cruises with his spouse. In recent years his travels were less far reaching, but Peter continued to enjoy going out with friends to explore, visit, go to the movies, and eat.

Peter shared with his father and daughter the distinction of each having been awarded a patent. His father Peter’s patent related to milk trucks, his to measuring respiration, and Lori’s to stopping infections.

Peter will be most remembered for pitching in when help was needed, be it to sell pumpkins, run a tournament, chaperone a Girl Scout trip to New York City with his wife, or make a Ceasar salad.

Visitation hours will be January 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Swan Funeral Home in Clinton. A Memorial service will be held April 8 at the United Methodist Church in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Branford, who provided excellent end of life home care for his wife Joyce.
