Michael Anthony Dattilo passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on October 2, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer. Michael was born in Maida, Italy on July 21, 1940 to the late Guiseppe and Vittoria (Tedesco) Dattilo. He was predeceased by his sister Elisabetta (Gino) Delfino and Theresa (Frank) Fiola. Along with his parents and three sisters Michael immigrated to Nyack, New York in 1955. While their families grew, they created a life of love and unbreakable bonds. After moving to New York, Michael pursued the American Dream through his passion for building and developing. He was a self-made oil marketer and distributor, hotel and real estate developer, restaurateur and venture capitalist. Michael worked his way up from humble beginnings, owning his own hair salon to eventually owning his first gas station and later developing his oil company, Super Value Oil, where locations stretched throughout the tristate area and beyond. He began his beautiful family in the 1970s and later moved to the Connecticut shoreline where he found the home of his dreams. At 40 years old, Michael bought the historic, seaside Bill Hahn Inn in Westbrook, Connecticut. He redeveloped and expanded it into what is now known as Water’s Edge Resort and Spa. Michael poured his heart and soul into making his resort a place for families to create lasting memories. At 70 years old he moved to Naples, Florida where he enjoyed the climate that reminded him of his birthplace in southern Italy. Never wanting to retire, his active business mind created a new real estate development company called Five Diamonds, in honor of his five children.
Although building and developing were a passion of his, Michael’s true love in life was spending time with family and friends. He was known for his big heart and welcoming people into his home for family gatherings with delicious food, wine, love and always laughter. He instilled in those close to him that nothing was more important than family. Michael’s passing has left a sadness in many hearts, he will be profoundly missed by his loved ones.
