Following a brief and unexpected illness, Lewis Williams Grant, Jr., of Estero, FL and Westbrook, CT, passed away at 5:54 a.m. on August 21, 2023, at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Lewis was born on August 22, 1951, in Cranston, Rhode Island and grew up in Norfolk, MA. After attending and graduating from King Phillip Regional High School in 1969, he went on to study Aviation Maintenance at East Coast Aero Technical School in Bedford, MA and continued his education at Manchester Community College in Manchester, CT.
After receiving his degree in 1971, he went on briefly to work for Quonset Point in North Kingstown, RI and before settling into a 44-year career at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford and Middletown, CT. During his tenure he held many positions, from building jet engines as an aircraft mechanic, to teaching as a specialized instructor, and retired in 2017 as a Quality Control Inspector.
In 1993, Lewis met the love of his life, Nancy, whom he wed on June 8, 1996. They moved from Windsor Locks to Westbrook, CT in 1998. In 2017, Lewis and Nancy both retired to Estero, FL. Their 27-year marriage was spent laughing, travelling the world, boating, enjoying family, and doing everything together.
Lewis enjoyed going to Indianfield Campground in Salem, CT with his children, waterskiing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, and above all else, spending time with his family. He was known to his friends, neighbors, co-workers, and all who met him as a one of kind man who was the most compassionate, humble, generous, and kind person they ever met or knew. He would go to any length to help anyone in need and never expected or asked for anything in return.
Lewis is predeceased by his parents Lewis Williams Grant, Elizabeth Grant (Schielein) and his brother William E. Grant. Lewis is survived by Nancy Grant, his best friend and loving wife of 27 years; 2 children Kristina McGuire and William Grant (Michele Grant) of Windsor Locks, CT; 2 stepchildren Kimberly Compton of Westbrook, CT and Lindsay Compton of Estero, FL; sister Linda Croteau (Paul Croteau) of Estero, FL; 6 grandchildren Sheridan McGuire and John McGuire, Hailey Johnson, Colby Grant, and Gavin Grant, Gabriella Rampello; niece Nancy Sydow (David Sydow) of Merrimack, NH; nephew Paul Croteau (Heather Croteau) of North Kingstown, RI; and 6 great-nieces and nephews Cameron, Evan, and Owen Sydow, and Calvin, Colton, and Johana Croteau.
Services will be held at Swan Funeral Home in Clinton, CT on Wednesday August 30, 2023. Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and formal service will start at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lewis’ honor be made to The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries in Essex, CT, Make a Wish Foundation, or Harry Chapin Food Bank in Fort Myers, FL.
