Charles Herbert Horne, resident of Ocala, Florida, (formerly of Tilton, NH, Salisbury, NH and Clinton, CT) went home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2020 at West Marion Hospital, Ocala, Florida at the age of 83. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving daughter and son-in-law.
Charles, affectionately known as Charlie, was born March 24, 1937 in Nyack, New York, son of the late Wallace W. Horne and Ruth C. (McElroy) Horne Samson. He is survived by his sister, Ruth (Horne) Couchey of New York; his brother, Wallace Horne of California; his daughter, Cindy (and Dennis) Shearer of Ocala, Florida; three grandchildren, Sean (and Aimee) Corbin of Massachusetts, Nicole (and Lance) Gillam of Ohio and Brian (and Kate) Corbin of Connecticut. In addition he is survived by three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his half-sister, Kathy (Samson) Weston Holton of Vermont and his wife of nearly 34 years, Louise (Goodale) Horne, who passed away in 1991.
Charles, a submarine veteran, gladly and proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 22 years retiring in 1976 as a Radioman Chief Petty Officer. The USS Halfbeak, the USS Corporal and the USS Robert E Lee were a few of the ships he served on before his last duty as a Special Instructor at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT. During his naval career, Charlie and his family lived in Hawaii for three years while he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Pratt & Whitney (Middletown, CT) and Watts Industries (Franklin, NH). Charles enjoyed music, playing golf, sitting on his porch watching birds, and having morning coffee with friends at McDonalds in Ocala, Florida and Franklin, New Hampshire.
Friends may call at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main Street in Clinton, CT on Saturday, December 5 from 10 -11 AM with a service at 11 AM and a burial immediately following at West Cemetery, Madison, CT. Rev. Joe Cancelleri will officiate the service and graveside service with military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
