Carol was born on August 24th in Guilford to the late Bertram R.A. and Laura Ward Smith.
Carol was a graduate of the Old Morgan School, class of 1948. She remained a Clinton resident her entire life and gave back to the community many times over.
Carol was among the first to graduate from the nursing program at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1951. She went on to become Head Nurse at Middlesex Memorial Hospital. She also worked as the Head Nurse at the Clinton Convalescent Center for many years. Following her nursing career, she helped to manage the family business, Shore TV and Appliance.
Carol founded and became the first President of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary in 1973. She remained president for three years.
She will be remembered for her wonderful smile, her love for her family, and devotion to her husband.
In addition to her loving husband of 57 years, Bud, she will be missed by her children Gerry Vece and wife Jane; Susan Mugavero and husband Fred; Patty Esposito and husband Dave, and Peggy Cretella and husband Jeff.
Carol also enjoyed her 11 grandchildren and will be missed greatly by them: Mike and his wife Amity, Tara, and Jackie Vece, Casey and Jaime Mugavero, Kelly and Alan Esposito, Kevin Johnson, Joey and Gigi Marino, and Jaimey Cretella. She also has two great grandchildren, Quintin and Cadence Vece, and many nieces and nephews.
She will be reunited with her daughter, Bette Johnson, who passed away in 2004 at the age of 41 and fondly remembered by her former son-in-law Glen Johnson and Bette’s stepson Greg. Carol was also predeceased by her parents, Bertram and Laura Smith, and her sister Barbara Hall.
Family and friends may visit the Swan Funeral Home, 80E Main St. Clinton on Sunday, June 2nd from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 3rd at St.Mary Church of the Visitation in Clinton at 11 a.m.
