Percy Edward Davis

Percy Edward Davis was born to the late Percy Edward and Vivian Davis

Sr. in Cleveland, Ohio on December 5, 1931. Percy had two siblings,

Herman and Helen who preceded him in death.

Percy received his secondary education in the Cleveland Public Schools.

He was a graduate of John Hay High School.

On October 5, 1961, Percy was joined in holy matrimony to Blythe J. Smith

and this union was blessed with the brief life of a daughter who they named

Blythe, Jr. She was lovingly called “Buffy.”

He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Emmanuel

Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. B. Robert Lawson,

where he faithfully served. Percy also faithfully served his Lord and Savior

at the Bible Baptist Church and Mt. Olive M.B. Church where he served

on the New Members Team Ministry until his health began to decline.

Along his journey, Percy has mentored and cared for many sons and

daughters. He conducted a Men’s Bible Study in his home for many years

again until he was no longer able to do so.

Percy retired from the Cleveland Public School System in 1984. He followed

a dream of being a long-distance trucker. He and his wife purchased an

18-wheeler and off he went. Unfortunately, he was able to enjoy this dream

for only twelve months, because his mother and sister became ill, and there

was no one to care for them. He assumed the responsibility of caregiver for

them both.

Percy was an amateur photographer. He built his own dark room in the

basement of his home. He was a member of the Karamu Camera Guild,

which was composed of both professionals and amateurs.

Percy also loved to go fishing with his friends, even renting boats and really

going fishing. He was a tinker and loved to tinker with the computers

when they first came on the scene. However, he never quite mastered it. He

loved tools (all types of tools) just look in his garage. He prided himself

on how well he cared for his lawn and home. Any time a friend needed a

handy man here comes Percy with his tool bag in hand.

He loved books and would go to the ½ off sales and come back with all

types of books, Cookbooks, books on home maintenance, Bibles, Bible

dictionaries, commentaries, various topics of the Christian faith from the

beginning to the end times. He had the dummy books, for instance he

had, Guitar for Dummies, Fitness for Dummies, etc. Take a journey over

to his home and you will find a vast assortment from the basement to the

second floor.

He and Blythe enjoyed going out to eat alone and with friends. They

enjoyed going to the movies and snacking on ice cream cones. They also

enjoyed cruising on the Norwegian cruise line. Percy would get the paper

and plan their Apple vacation.

Percy and Blythe took Moody classes at Brush High School where he

earned his certification in Biblical Studies.

For the past couple of years as his gait got slower, he would get into his SUV

and drive down to Red Walter’s for a shrimp dinner at least two to three

times per week. He was a regular customer and as his mobility decreased

the staff would bring his food to the car and often made special concessions

to assist Mr. Davis.

Percy was known to many as a dear friend.

He leaves to mourn, his bride Blythe of sixty-one years; his niece Marcelle

(Plum) Reid of Maryland; nieces; great-nieces; nephews; and so many

others who loved “Mr. Percy”.

A visitation for Percy will be held Monday, April 3, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cummings & Davis Funeral Home, 13201 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland, Ohio 44112. A wake will occur Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM, 13201 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland, Ohio 44112. A home going service will occur Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 12:00 PM, 13201 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland, Ohio 44112. An interment will occur Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Highland Park Cemetery, 21400 Chagrin Blvd, Cleveland, Ohio 44112.
