Born on June 27, 1954, in Columbus, Ohio, Betty and her family followed the trend of many Black families
at the time by migrating to Cleveland, Ohio. She later attended and graduated from East Tech High School in 1972, where she discovered her love of singing and joined the All City Choir and a Madrigal singing group.
Betty attended Indiana State University, which placed her on the path to one of her most fulfilling jobs—
working with children at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. There she had the important job of
caring for ailing children and supporting their families. Betty continued to lend her love and care at retirement facilities, becoming a favorite among her coworkers, who became lifelong friends.
In 1982, while hanging out with a mutual friend, Betty was set up on a blind date where she was introduced to Gilbert Charles Zachary, who would later become her husband. This loving union brought forth two children, Alyse K. Zachary and Stephen C. Zachary. Another love Betty developed was for cooking. She was often found creating and sharing recipes with family and friends.
A deeply spiritual woman with a strong love of God, Betty was a loving wife and mother. She was adored
by many and touched the hearts of numerous people throughout her life. On June 7th, her unwavering faith
was fulfilled as God decided to call her home, bringing peace to a life well-lived and cherished by all who knew her.
Betty is survived by her husband Gilbert, and their two children, Alyse and Stephen. Aunt Claudia Omobude and Cousin Annalie Satterwhite.
