We were deeply saddened to hear of Phil's passing. It was an honor to know him.  I met Linda and Phil when Linda was working in my father's dental office.  Phil was always such a pleasure to see. I still remember the tour he took our family on of the wind tunnel at NASA. He was always so kind and thoughtful.

When Phil and Linda   moved to Lyndhurst,  he became part of our NASA carpool, so  I saw him several times every week.  Lynn and I became social friends with them as well. Phil had the ability to read and study in a a moving car, going the same way every day, without falling asleep . And since he made our group five strong, nobody had to drive twice the same week, which made scheduling  much easier.
When we had discussions, Phil almost always knew something about the topic and could offer good advice. He was always calm and never ruffled. People  I  knew that worked with him found him to be that way, too - and upbeat and funny  at times. "Nice guy", was the unanimous judgement.

I had the opportunity to work with Phil for a number of years. When I interviewed for my job more than 30 years ago Phil sat in on the interview, as he held a management position at the time.  

Always unflappable, he was an easy guy to get along with. This was emphasized by his habit of smiling whenever you entered the room. After he retired from the government he returned  as a contractor. Free of the bonds of supervision he relished the idea of becoming a subject matter expert and immersing himself in learning. Phil became our go-to guy when we needed to know more about something. 

Phil had a generous nature. We had heard that he continued to work after his retirement to help pay for his mother-in-law's care, but that generosity was confirmed when we had major cutbacks due to funding. He retired a second time so that younger persons just starting their life might keep their job. That speaks volumes and I know that I am not alone in wishing that Phil was still with us. I offer my condolences to his family. I will always think of Phil warmly.

I still remember Phil taking Michael to the wind tunnel at Nasa. Something that Michael will always remember and cherish.

Phil was both a mentor and a true friend to me at NASA. He helped me write my first paper and present it at a conference in Buffalo NY and Baltimore MD. I was always touched by his kindness and was so fortunate to have dinner with he and Linda while in Baltimore. My condolences to the whole family and am forever grateful for Phil's never-ending kindness and friendship.

The most kind and generous person, (along with Linda). Always was there in a second to help us when needed. He will truly be missed!

Thoughts & prayers to you Linda, Marc & Howard . Lots of great memories growing up a Charltonite with you all. Especially loved seeing all the patches from the Apollo space program with Phil’s work @ NASA 

Phil was my father during my college years.  He and Linda shared their home with while I attended Ohio State with Mark from 1980 to 1984.  Linda gave me a key to their home and a bedroom to use anytime.  The true warmth, homecooked meals, hundreds of movies on Beta Max and laughter are memories I will truly cherish the rest of my life.  Phil was a true hero to me and someone I always looked up to.  I am deeply saddened by his loss and wish I could be there to share this emotional time with Linda, Mark and Howard in the loss of such a great man.  Please accept me deepest condolences
