He went to high school at Academy High School in Erie, Pennsylvania and then on to Penn State (which remained important to him his whole life!) although he earned his undergraduate degree from Gannon College in Erie. He then got a masters degree in social work from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.
Hy had a long and successful career, working in Jewish summer camps, JCC's and Jewish Federations across the country - Cleveland, Atlanta, Boston, Omaha, Akron and in several communities in New Jersey. At the end of his career, he was especially proud of the work he did with the JCC Association's Merrin Teen Fellows as it was a capstone of his professional life spent mentoring young Jewish professionals.
He was a loving parent, an accomplished fisherman, a Browns fan, a Guardians fan, and a proud Penn State alum.
Hy is survived by his loving sister Annette Paley, and his family, whom he loved very much and who brought him great joy: Phyllis Tabachnick, Scotty and Laura Tabachnick, Diane Tabachnick and Michael Atkinson, Heidi Blinka, Chris and Gayle Wiedamann, Edmond and Jenny Knighton, Deirdre and Bart Miller, Ethan Tabachnick, and his niece and nephews Stephen, Michael and Andrew Paley, and Annie Leonard and his cherished companion Barbara Rosenthall. He is preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne, his brother-in-law, Les Paley, and his sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Ed Halpern.
Funeral services will be held at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 South Taylor Rd, Cleveland Heights on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Rabbi Andrew Paley officiating.
