I recently heard of Greg’s passing and devastated does not begin to cover how I feel. I met Greg in 2014 when he was the DFO at Fordham. I was a girl who had recently graduated college with no football or sports experience. By some fate along the way I got connected to Greg. To this day I’m not sure why Greg attached himself to me, but it changed my life. Greg was my friend, my best friend at times, he was my mentor, and an older brother. 

Greg loved nicknames and Greg’s nickname for me was Sasha. To this day I have no idea why he called me Sasha, but the nickname stuck to the point where most players had no idea my name was actually Sarah. 

Professionally, Greg made my career. He taught me everything I know about work ethic, passion, bonding with others, and loving what you do. He started my career at Fordham, helped get me the DFO job at University of Dayton. He always reminded me of my accolades, he never spoke of his own. Everything Greg taught me is why I have the career today. It’s unfathomable to think about my life trajectory without Greg in it, because he made it what it is.

Greg was an incredible person that I was lucky to know. He always knew how to make me laugh, make me feel loved. I remember one of my birthdays I had spent at Fordham; I was living at home and was in a fight with my mom. I stayed until almost midnight in the office, and Greg stayed there with me. We threw a football around, joked and talked. We didn’t do any work and there was no need for us to be there, but Greg made sure I didn’t spend my birthday alone. I’ll never forget that memory, among the million others.

I last spoke to Greg a month before he passed. I wish I had told him how much I loved him one last time. Life will never be the same without Greg, without his laugh, his smile, his strut, his presence. I’m so lucky I had the time with him, and I will miss him forever. I love you Greg. We'll meet again.

Dear Jenny and Claudia and the whole Marmaros family, I was so so sorry to hear about your beloved brother and son. The service was a loving tribute to Greg, so beautiful. Thank you all for sharing stories about Greg. He obviously touched so many lives, and will continue to do so. I will now have the phrase in my head: "You win with good people." I have known Greg from early on as a neighbor across the street.  We had many interactions in many  ways as a result.  I always enjoyed hearing the young Greg's enthusiasm for sports,  hearing him announcing events from across the street.  One thing that always stood out about Greg was his special smile and kind spirit that was a halo around him.  Those qualities were innate in him, and all that was clearly captured at his memorial. We all felt the same thing and will continue to feel and carry that with us forever.

Pete, Claudia and Matt,  Andy, Danny and I are so very sorry for your loss.  We have never forgotten you and your family.  Sharing in your heartache and sorrow.  

I’ll always admire Greg as being the sweetest kid around, with such a great sense of humor and huge heart.  Like so many others, I’m filled with fond memories of him.  One of my earliest was when as a little kid (still wearing those big glasses) he brought home chipmunks that we caught in the woods; if I recall, I think he ‘almost’ convinced Claudia and Pete to keep them.  I remember all the fun I had with him and Matt riding our bikes around town, watching games at Jacob’s Field, sneaking into rated-R movies, and taking road trips in Bernie’s buggy to wrestling matches and waterparks.  In my memories, he was the Fonzie of the Beachwood pool -- I think he even set up an office at the snack bar.  I also remember Greg and Matt were like two peas in a pod; they made the best comedy duo in the neighborhood and were experts at getting us in but then out of trouble.  He was an all-star athlete, yet he never treated anyone as beneath him and was kind to all.  It’s no surprise to hear what a great man Greg became, the accomplishments he had with the Pats and in sports, and the impact he made on kids’ lives.  He was a special person and I’m grateful for my memories of him.

We met Greg his first year at Hawken when our son, Pearce, was in 7th grade. “Big Marm” became a family friend real fast. My son loved hanging out in Greg’s office before school, free periods and after school.  He treated them like peers. Always letting them in the gym to get up shots without a teacher present. He was their favorite. My son left Hawken for St. Ignatius his Freshman year. Greg always checked in with me several times a year to see how my son “PG” was doing at Ignatius and to check on my family.  I told my wife and son as we were leaving the funeral that although we only knew Greg a short period of time we actually knew the real Greg through and through. He touched every person he came across. We will always honor him and be thankful for the impact he had on my sons life. He will never be forgotten.  God bless your family.

This is one of those times where mere words fail me.
Greg was the kind of person that all of us should aspire to be.  He was a leader and a worker.  He did a great job when I was in contact with him at Hawken and he was on the fast track to becoming an outstanding wrestling official.
It hardly seems possible that so many years have passed since I did his matches.
I can not imagine what you are feeling but please know that you did a great job in raising Greg.
Hawken School and the NOWOA are poorer with his loss.

I know it’s been years since I’ve seen most of you, but you all hold a very special place in my heart. I spent so many play dates and fun times at your house as a kid and teenager with Jenny.. and I have lots of memories of her adorable and funny younger brother Greg playing alongside us. To the Marmaros family,


I knew Greg from Hawken School. We started the Jewish Interest Group together. I got to know Greg and meet with him regularly because of that connection. I can't adequately convey how much those kids loved him! The Jewish Interest Group was regularly the largest attended and I think, in large part, that was because they knew Greg would be there. They also knew they would eat well.  He always went the extra mile when it came to feeding those kids and made everyone, including me, feel special. I retired a couple of years ago and Greg invited me back to the group this past year to speak about my time in Israel.  I know that, in part, he did that for me to allow me to see everyone again and it was greatly appreciated. Greg was like that.  He was a truly special, warm, kind, empathetic person and I feel blessed to have had the honor of working beside him.

What a special moment at the end of this video of the 1st play of the 1st game last season. GM, I'm still trying to process that you are no longer with us. We just talked and texted a few weeks ago, and I was looking forward to you coming to one of my games this season here in Toledo as i started my new journey in coaching high school football. Over the last 2 years, we developed a great friendship that was going to be for years to come. You are one of the few people that i have met that truly cared about people and wanted the best for everyone no matter who they were. You understood the morals, values, and life skills that i was building in young men playing the game of football. There are not many people like you... It's been a rough week for your family, friends, me, and the many others that have love for you.  For me, we had plans that we discussed.... We had amazing chemistry as athletic director and head coach.  We had reconnecting plans at a future school somewhere and championships to win... Now that has changed.... however,  I will make sure that you will be a part of my coaching journey going forward. I will always keep you in my heart. Thank you for the impact you made in my life and my family's lives and all the kids at Hawken School. During my time working with you, I will always appreciate your support, motivation, and encourage.. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You will be deeply missed by me and many others...Until we meet again, my friend, my good brother, my AD, my General Manager, GM. RIP Greg ! 🙏

I am Susie Loparo's and Alan Brown's brother who lives near Northwestern U. and got to know Greg very well when he assisted the football team there about 10 years ago. I did reach out to one of the key people there when I heard the news and they share their deepest sympathies. Greg and I became instant friends when we met and he was really liked and respected by those around him. He had the whole package-- great personality, smart, and a desire to grow in his profession. Reading some of the other condolences I can see how he was really liked and positively effected so many lives at Hawken. You and your family and friends truly have mine and my family's  deepest sympathies. 

Greg was much more than just my boss at Hawken, Greg was a mentor, a cheerleader and a close friend. Greg constantly believed in me, cheered me on, challenged me to be better than the day before and let me lean on him when I needed support. I have never had someone who knew my potential for success before I even dreamed it for myself. He was someone I loved sharing good news with because he was always so excited. He was what a leader should be. Above all else, Greg showed up for the students at Hawken. He has a talent for finding the kids that needed a little bit of extra love and making sure that they felt like a part of the community. He made sure that Hawken was a safe space for all.
I am heartbroken that others will not get to experience this constant love, encouragement and support. I am a better person today because of Greg Marmaros and I am one of many who can proudly say that. I will miss you dearly my friend. Love you.

Very sorry to hear the sad news of Greg’s passing.  Greg and I worked at Fordham together when he was on the football staff.  He was kind, thoughtful, engaging, always fun to be around and always on top of his work.  A true gentleman who left a very positive impression on everyone who had the privilege to meet him.  Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends at this difficult moment.  


We are deeply saddened to hear the news about Greg.  He was always so caring and kind and he will be dearly missed.  

Our  kids have many wonderful memories of Greg.   He  stepped  up as a softball coach when the previous one have to leave.   Once he brought each girl a  pint of ice cream after especially hard practice.  They still talk about it.
 
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.  We will always remember him.

Our son, Chase Levey, would come home from Hawken's MS with stories about Greg and how he would fist-pump him with a congratulatory smile when the Hawken XC and T&F team did well.  

Greg was always excited about post-season meets and would share his excitement about our children competing, as seen by his text message, showing me his entry ticket to watch the middle school State Championship in Columbus.   

On the same note, during our global pandemic, Greg offered his ticket to a local T&F event to Chase's Grandma because of the cap on the number of guests who could attend.  

THIS is who Greg was - - funny, kind, caring, thoughtful, compassionate - - a friend, a leader, a mentor, a trusted partner in our son's journey at Hawken.

Rest in Peace, Greg.   You've more than earned it.  

Greg was a fierce advocate who lead with passion. His genuine spirit and supporter of our son and all of the younger generation is what we loved most about Greg.  We would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Greg. He will be missed.

As someone who writes for a living I am struggling for words right now. I miss our conversations over a "Bob" in the office but most of all I miss you my friend. Our family met Greg through Fordham Football.  He was unbelievably helpful and excited to help a northeast Ohio family get their bearings and comfort level at Fordham and by extension the Bronx and NYC.

I was fortunate to work with Greg at Fordham.  We stayed in touch even after we both moved on from Fordham.  Greg was a special person who touched so many.   He was an incredible influence by just being himself and showing others how to care for students and staff.
