I fondly remember Allan from his many years at the Naval Postgraduate School.    He was very unusual for at least two reasons.     First, he was a top tier mechanical engineer teaching electrical engineering as well, if not better, than electrical engineers.   Even more uniquely for any kind of engineer he had a very keen sense of humor and possessed a repertoire of jokes that kept me smiling and laughing whenever we met.    He was a great engineer and a kind and thoughtful human being who will be missed by many.    

I was saddened to learn of Allan's death. One of my greatest treasures is a book signing where he wrote "your friend, Allan Kraus."

I knew Allan in the late 1970s and still consider him one of the greatest mentors of my life.  His strive for excellence in engineering have stayed with me for my entire career.  I was so sad to learn of his passing.  His influence, his humor and his generous nature in guidance of his students will be remembered and cherished.

Allan was a great professor, a great engineer, and a great pleasure to know.  It was my privilege to know him during his time at the Naval Postgraduate School.  My sincere condolences to his family.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the Kraus family.

My fellow graduate students and I called him "The Coach" during our two years at the Naval Postgraduate School (1985-1987) in Monterey, California.  When he saw that our attention to the material being presented was waning, he would simply say, "Watch the Coach."  He was a character in the nicest sense of the word.  A great teacher and friend, we enjoyed him in the classroom and out on the golf course.  He always had a kind or humorous remark to make us laugh and keep things on an even keel.

A recognized international expert in heat transfer, specifically associated with the cooling of solid state electronic equipment, he immediately commanded our respect.  He brought an unsurpassed level of credibility to the classroom, as an accomplished engineer with numerous practical accomplishments and publications.  He was proud of his service in the Navy and, as fellow naval officers, it spoke volumes to us as well.

I can't surpress my laughter when I think about some of the off-color things he used to do and say.  He had a big heart and cared deeply for each of us.

Allan was truly one of my heroes.  I met him many years ago when he was teaching an ASME course on heat transfer.  He invited me to join his board - I did - and I am active to this day.  He will be missed!

I serve on the ASME staff and had the pleasure of working with Allan during his volunteer tenure with the organization.  His dedication to the profession of mechanical engineering was exemplary.

My favorite memory of him was the special tour that he gave to my wife, my daughter and me of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
