William Gould Jr.

Bill Gould, 98, was born to Will Gould and Stella Seel Gould in southwest Michigan on January 7, 1919, and grew up on a dairy farm near Dowagiac. He was educated at Albion College, Northwestern University, and later at the University of Georgia. During World War II, he served in the Pacific as bombardier on a B-24 Liberator. Upon returning to the States, he married Mary Ellen Griffin of Greenville, SC, and put down roots in the South. In the years that followed, he farmed in Gray Court, SC, sold farm machinery for New Holland, and taught landscape architecture at the University of Maryland. After their retirement, Bill and Mary Ellen moved to Winston-Salem. Bill’s colored pencil drawings and daffodil seedlings have won numerous prizes. “Wewak Bay,” one of his favorite hybrids, was named for the site in New Guinea where many of his fellow airmen were shot down. Bill is survived by three children—Rebecca Gould Gibson (Bill) and David William Gould of Winston-Salem, and William Griffin Gould (Marguerite) of Washington, DC; three grandchildren—Alice Gibson Buchanan (Pat), Charles David Gibson, and Mariel Grace Gould; as well as one great-grandchild—Charlotte Groome Buchanan. The family thanks the doctors, caregivers, and neighbors who helped enrich Bill’s last days.
