On Nov 22, 2015 Ruth Lee Austin (nee Greene), 92, of Winston-Salem, NC was called home. Ruth was born in Forsyth County on May 6, 1923 to the late Joseph Turner Greene and Mervin Greene. In 1941 Ruth was selected by Cecil B. DeMille as the prettiest girl in Hanes High School. In the late 1940’s worked for Dr. Hilton as his private secretary and later worked as a professional floral arranger. Ruth was a homemaker, seamstress, gardener and “domestic artist”. Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Greene Disher, her brother, JT Greene, and in 2010 her beloved husband, of 40 years, David. She is survived by her niece, Camille McDowell of Winston-Salem, and step-children, Lynn Diebold of Salinas California, Carolyn Haynes of Medford Oregon, Robert David Austin III of Gold Hill Oregon, and many step-grand and great-grand children in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Ruth Austin was an active member of College Park Baptist Church. Over the years she sang in the Choir, sang with the Grace Notes, and served on various committees and at many church and community events.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov 25th at 11:15 am at College Park Baptist Church 1701 Polo Rd, (at Wake Dr.) Winston-Salem for refreshments and viewing. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Ramon Smith officiating, followed by internment at Forsyth Memorial Park on Yadkinville Road.
Ruth and David moved to Salemtowne retirement community in 2009. The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone at Salemtowne, and especially the dedicated health care center staff for their outstanding care of both Mr. and Mrs. Austin.
