He was born to Charles Robah Ferguson and Carrie Pearl Ogburn Ferguson.
He and five friends joined the National Guard during WWII. Afterwards, he worked for NC Shipbuilding Co. in Wilmington building liberty ships for the war effort. While in Wilmington, he married Mary Worth Walker.
He returned to Winston-Salem, and during his career with Southland Life Insurance Company as an agent and staff manager, he made many lifelong friends.
He was a lifelong member of Oak Summit United Methodist Church. He was very community-minded and served in a number of volunteer capacities, including Chief of Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department (MSVFD), Board of Directors for MSVFD and Forsyth Civic Club, Scout Master of Troop 81, and in numerous positions and capacities for his church. In addition, he worked tirelessly to contribute toward the success of Ferguson Manufacturing Company, his son’s business. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is preceded in death by his wife; and siblings, Carrie Wayne Ferguson, Charles Ferguson, and Mildred Sheets.
He is survived by one son, Donald Blake Ferguson; daughter-in-law, Jill Culler Ferguson; three grandchildren, Ryan (Myranda) Ferguson, Rosemary (Todd) Banks, Blair (Bethaney) Ferguson, and two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Kellan Banks.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October, 29, 2012 at Frank Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel in Winston-Salem. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem.
