He was born in Plymouth, NC to John Robert and Olivia Burbage Campbell. He received his Bachelors and Law Degrees from Wake Forest University and served in the Army in World War II with the rank of First Lieutenant. Mr. Campbell retired in 1980 as North Carolina District Counsel for the Veterans Administration.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and continued his ministry with senior outreach by visiting shut-ins. Prior to 1987 he was a member of First Baptist Church serving as Sunday School Superintendent and as a Trustee.
Mr. Campbell served on the Board of Family Services and as President of the Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and Forsyth Country Club where he was an avid golfer.
Surviving are two sons, C. Robert (and his wife, Denise) Campbell of Coral Gables, FL, John Campbell of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Colleen (and her husband, Jon) Shellabarger of Coral Gables, FL and Rob (and his wife, Carmen) Campbell of Atlanta, GA.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Robbins Campbell, and one sister Elizabeth Campbell Allen of Williamston, NC.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Frank Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Rev. Craig Ford and Rev. Jack Yarbrough will officiate. Visitation will be a half hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park followed by a luncheon at Forsyth Country Club.
