

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the widow of Guy J. Ahearn. Mrs. Ahearn was a graduate of New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, and later trained as a bookkeeper at D.H. Schulte Cigar Co. on Broadway. She and her husband raised five children in Huntington, Long Island, before settling in North Carolina in 1972. Mrs. Ahearn enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and traveled widely with her husband after their retirement from Metropanels, an advertising company she helped her husband start.
She was a volunteer at Huntington Hospital, and later at Clare Bridge Memory Care in Winston-Salem, and remained a loyal supporter of Operation Smile, Boys and Girls Town, Shriners Hospital for Children, and an array of veterans’ organizations and Catholic missions.
A photography, opera, and computer enthusiast, she was an avid fan of tennis and basketball, especially the Spurs. A first-generation Italian-American, Mrs. Ahearn was preceded in death by her cherished grandson, Matthew James Mazzola, sister, Martha Motley, brother, Larry Barber, and her parents, Joseph and Maria Barbieri.
Her survivors include sons, Brian J. Ahearn of Winston-Salem and Patrick M. Ahearn of Statesville; daughters, Christine Hurley of Winston-Salem, Peggy Ann Mazzola of Naples, Fla., and Lorraine Ahearn of Greensboro; sons-in-law, Daniel Hurley, Joseph B. Mazzola, and Kevin Brigham; daughters-in-law, Ellen and Lesa Ahearn; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, where she was a member. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road.
