Jonathan Fordyce Meter, 75, of Clemmons, NC, passed away in Winston-Salem, NC on September 13, 2022. Born on June 6, 1947 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late John William Meter and Marjorie Daw (Fordyce) Meter. He was the loving husband of Arlene (Veet) Meter, with whom he shared 50 beautiful years of marriage.
Jonathan was a graduate of Reading High School, Kutztown State College (B.S., Education) and Lehigh University (M.Ed., Elementary Principal Certification). He also attended Penn State University.
As a youth, Jonathan worked for his uncle, Karl Meter, at Mae’s Flower Shop and had many fond memories of playing basketball at the “Pike” playground. He taught 5th grade in the Governor Mifflin School District in Shillington, PA for 30 years, most of which was in 5B at GMIS. He retired in 1999.
Jonathan was very involved in his community by heading the GM Blue Jeans for Babies fundraising efforts, starting and coaching a middle school girls’ softball program at Governor Mifflin, negotiating teacher contracts, and running for PA State Representative for the 128th Legislative District.
Jonathan was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, Shillington, PA, for 27 years before moving to Clemmons, NC in 2007 and becoming a member at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Jonathan was a Eucharistic Minister in both churches and served as a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He always loved taking his granddaughters, Audrey and Julia, along with his son-in-law, Craig, to Holy Family’s Father-Daughter Dances.
Jonathan was a huge University of North Carolina basketball fan as well as a Penn State Football (and PSU Creamery) fan. While living in PA, every Monday night, he looked forward to playing backgammon with his best friend, Donald Bickel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Craig Cannon, as well as his three grandchildren, Audrey, Julia and Evan Cannon of Winston-Salem, NC, his first cousins Candace Jones Reuss and Karl Meter, sister-in-law, Linda Veet, brother-in-law, Michael Veet (wife, Sharon), nieces, Laure Veet Garay, Lisa Perrotti, Lesli Linn, nephew Michael Veet, his best friend, Donald Bickel, as well as many other family members and friends.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC at 11 a.m. on September 22nd. Family will receive guests at 10:30 a.m. A second mass will be held at St. John Baptist de La Salle Church in Shillington, PA at 10 a.m. on October 10th with family receiving guests at 9:30 a.m.
